Flingern is a district of Dusseldorf historically characterised by heavy metal factories and by the Schmincke Pigment Factory that was located in this location from 1840 to 1960. Since the mid-1960s, Metro has its corporate office campus here, with 5000 staff spread across 14 buildings.

Metro is a company specialising in food for gastronomy and hospitality, but the headquarters projects nothing more than an image of corporate efficiency, grey and inhospitable.

The reworking of the base of the Headquarter creates a building that looks to the future becoming a showcase for Metro’s products. Offices, staff canteen and meeting rooms are removed from the base of the building to create space for four independent restaurants and connections to flexible workspaces.

The hanging plants have integrated self-irrigation systems

"At the campus, we want to bring to life who we are and how we want to be: pragmatic, focused on our core business and in open dialogue with people – whether they are employees, business partners or customers. With the new catering facilities in the atrium, we are symbolically and literally bringing gastronomy, as our core customer group, into the heart of our business. This is a strong sign of our commitment to the industry and strengthens METRO's identity internally and our modern employer profile externally."

Dr Steffen Greubel, CEO of METRO AG
