REWE GREEN FARMING BERLIN GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
We celebrated at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for REWE Green Farming Berlin which took place on site at Malteserstraße in Lankwitz. This is the second iteration in the national roll out following the success of ACME´s Green Farming prototype in Wiesbaden.
"We gained important insights from this pilot store and developed a construction standard. We will gradually use this timber construction method for new buildings, whereby the use of the roof will vary." - Klaus Wiens of REWE.
The modular timber used in the supermarket's construction, comprises 42 columns with capitals made of stacked timber forming the supporting structure and creating a vaulted structure inside. Daylight floods into the market hall through a large glazed entrance façade and high level horizontal windows around the sides. The timber elements have standard dimensions so they can be dismantled and reused without being recycled. This highly visible modular timber structure forms the main element of a new architectural identity for REWE.
A rooftop farm will sit above the timber structure and will produce salad for sale in the store and for distribution to up to 700 other REWE supermarkets.
"By using roof surfaces as well as sunlight, waste heat, rainwater and existing logistics routes, we not only save valuable resources - we even avoid CO2 emissions," explains Nicolas Leschke, Managing Director of ECF Farmsystems.
Due for completion in Spring 2026.
