Novo Riga

Novo Riga is located in Krasnogorsk, an area defined by old forests interspersed with derelict industrial buildings and high density housing, located in the western outskirts of Moscow close to the Moscow Ring Road. The scheme seeks to re-interpret the stand-alone modernist high-rise into a new typology that combines the benefits of open landscape and sweeping views with the desire to create urban blocks and defined public spaces.

The adjacent forest landscape is continued across the site, meandering and spreading between the building. Each building is warped into a loop, defining an outer forest face and an inner garden face. This ensures that each block is organised around its own green courtyard, creating an interior secluded garden and community space with its own identity. Urban connections pass through the extended forest, reconnecting the eastern and western sides of the existing context.

Masterplan strategy

The buildings are designed to allow for easy phasing of construction, with 500-600 apartments in each doughnut-shaped block. Each block is designed to be constructed from regular modules, thereby ensuring complexity and interest, but a very high degree of repetition and standardisation.

In line with local regulations, the scheme has a large number of cores, ensuring corridors are kept to a minimum, as well as extensive winter-gardens that are usable in all seasons.
